 Military Outreach

The Altrusa International Foundation: is a not-for-profit, philanthropic corporation established in 1962 by Altrusa International Inc.and is dedicated to improving economic well-being and quality of life through a commitment to community services and literacy.

Wreaths Across America (WAA): mission is to REMEMBER those who have served in the military, to HONOR their service and sacrifice, and to TEACH others to do the same. Each December wreaths are layed upon gravsites at National Cemeteries and in all 50 states and beyond.  In San Diego, WAA supports Rosecrans and Miramar National Cememteries, Greenwood Memorial Park and Valley Center Cemetery.  Since San Diego is a military town, we have events where we spread the message about the importance of remembering our fallen heroes, honoring those who serve, and teaching others about the sacrifices made by veterans and families to preserve our freedoms.

Project Linus: handmade blankets are distributed to children suffering serious illness and trauma.  Recipient organizations include hospitals, homeless shelters and police stations where children from birth to 17 years of age are impacted by the comfort and love a "made from the heart" blanket provides. Our club provides service and a donation to the San Diego Chapter of Project Linus.  Our service includes distributing the blankets to numerous local non-profit entities that serve children who suffer serious illnesses and trauma.

The Altrusa Family Fund at Rady Children's Hospial San Diego: provides money for family needs not available from other sources for transportation for a child going home from the hospital and other expenses not covered by insurance.  The Altrusa Family fund was established in 1976.

The Rady Children's Hospital San Diego Toddler School: an educational program designed to integrate early education for children at risk with autistic spectrum disorders.  Curriculum focuses on teaching developmentally appropriate communication, cognitive and social skills.

The Altrusa Scholarship Fund: provides money to any student who will be continuing their education at a

vocational/ trade school or a two or four year college or university.

The Ronald McDonald House: provides a home away from home for children and their families while the child being treated for serious, often times life-threatening, illnesses at Children's Hospital.  Special events for the siblings are planned at least twice annually.  A "KEEP" Library was started in 2012 where family members can select and keep books of their choice.

Operation Homefront: Altrusa helps with different projects as requested.

Adopt A Military Family: every Christmas, Altrusa adopts a military family to make their holidays brighter.

San Diego Second Chance Program: to disrupt the cycles of incarceration and poverty by helping people find their way to self-sufficiency.
