                                                              AUTISM PROJECT

The Literacy Committee continues to help Trent with his autism needs.  He has made a lot of progress working on speech through music.  To assist him further an iPod and headphones with sound tracks from kids videos is needed has been purchased.   To see Trent using the iPod and headphones go to  https://youtube/dkn-Emwirhs

The literacy committee and ASTRA students made a Dr. Seuss craft item and received a Dr. Seuss story book along                                                                      with a bag of toys and a Project Linus blanket.

                                  HARVEST PARTY AT THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE

The literacy committee help the siblings at RMH make craft items.  Each child received a book bag with books and toys to enjoy.

JUNIOR GREAT BOOKS PROGRAM, ST DIDACUS PARRISH SCHOOL

Students in grades 5-8 are selected from the reading scores from their standardized test and must be reading at least one year above their grade level.  They use a method called Shared Inquiry(questioning) and focus on the authors purpose, critical thinking skills, discussion and debate.  Students are given a monthly assignment usually one or two short stories or poetry.  Children learn to express themselves orally.

ADOPT A TEACHER PROJECT

MS LORI, our adopted teacher, met with us for lunch to present educational literacy related items for her to use in her classroom.

                                                               ADOPT A TEACHER

The Literacy Committee adopted Ms Lori

Charles, Pre School teacher at the Rock School.

 

 

Nansea Wolff, Literacy Chairman, Jean Somers, Co-Chairman and Carol Miller give Ms Lori books she requested that deal with children's fears.  The books focused on separation anxiety and nighttime fears.

 

 

                                                          MARK TWAIN FEST

Mike and Terry Meaney, founders of San Diego Book Project provide books for the Mark Twain event  Both children and adult books are provided free of charge.

                                                        OPERATION STAND DOWN

Altrusa Club of San Diego members assisted Mike Meaney, owner of the San Diego Book Project by helping homeless veterans select and find books.  The San Diego Book Project also provides books for our Ronald McDonald Library and The UCSD Cancer Hospital.

 

 

 

                                                 RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE EVENTS

A Harvest and Dr. Seuss party are given each year to the children residing at the Ronald McDonald House.  Project Linus is invited to participate by providing blankets to the children.  The blankets provide comfort to the childrenduring this difficult time.
